how it all began
So there I was, sat at home thinking — what am I actually supposed to do? A disease that seemed to have eradicated all other causes of death had taken over the whole world. Lockdown?? Stockpiling toilet paper? Two metres apart… ok, mad. But my real question was: how am I going to look after my kids?
I’d been working as a face painter at children’s parties, and with restrictions in place, that source of income came to a screeching halt. Amidst the chaos, George Floyd was murdered. The upset and outrage was felt everywhere. We came together in anger, disappointment, and solidarity.
I was missing being creative, so I decided to sell some art prints — partly to scratch the itch, partly to make a little money. During the wave of solidarity for Black people, I stumbled across Facebook groups dedicated to celebrating and supporting small Black-owned businesses. I thought, why not whack a post on? Nothing to lose. Within hours, I had over 1,000 people asking for a catalogue. I. Was. Shaking. Black Koffee was loved by many.
But behind the scenes of the luxury products and shiny gifts, I was just at the start of what would become a very rough few years. They were tough years — but they taught me, shaped me, and helped me evolve. Now, I hope my own life experiences will give Black Koffee a deeper richness and quality that can only come from healing.
